DR.THOMAS H. BOYER, DVM, DABVP (REPTILE AND AMPHIBIAN PRACTICE) Dr. Thomas H. Boyer is the owner of the Pet Hospital of Peñasquitos since 1999. Dr.Boyer's vision is to give the community, his clients, and most of all, your pets, the finest health care possible. Dr. Boyer received his doctor of veterinary medicine (DVM) degree from Colorado State University, Ft. Collins, in 1989 after completing his pre-veterinary work at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Dr. Boyer has practiced dog and cat medicine, as well as exotic animal medicine, for over two decades.Dr. Boyer specializes in the veterinary care of reptiles and amphibians. In 1991 he co-founded the Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians, which now has over a thousand members world wide. He served as the organization's first president and created the Bulletin of the Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians, now the Journal of Herpetological Medicine and Surgery, and served as its Editor-in-Chief for eighteen years until 2008. The Journal of Herpetological Medicine and Surgery remains one of the premier veterinary publications focusing on reptiles and amphibians.
Dr. Boyer has published two books on reptile medicine through the American Animal Hospital Association, the most recent of which is Essentials of Reptiles: A Guide for Practitioners, in 1998.
Dr. Boyer spent a year as a clinical instructor in exotic animal medicine at Colorado State University's School of Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Teaching Hospital, in 1994 and 1995. He has an active interest in small and exotic animals and continues to lecture and write on reptiles and ferrets.
He is a member of American Animal Hospital Association, American Veterinary Medical Association, American Association of Zoo Veterinarians, Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians, Association of Avian Veterinarians, California Veterinary Medical Association, Ferrets Anonymous, San Diego County Veterinary Medical Association, San Diego Herpetological Society, and San Diego Turtle and Tortoise Society.
In 2008 Dr. Boyer was invited to be on the organizing committee of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners Reptile and Amphibian Specialty Committee and recently Dr. Boyer passed the qualifying examination in November 2010 and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, Reptile and Amphibian Practice (1 in 8 in the nation).

DR. ZACHARY J. STEFFES, DVM We are proud to welcome Dr. Zachary J. Steffes to our hospital. A new graduate from the University of California, Davis, Dr. Steffes is a full-time associate practicing dog, cat and exotic animal medicine with a special interest in dermatology, ultrasound, dentistry, and reptile medicine. Dr. Steffes received a Bachelor of Science degree from San Diego State University in 2006. Dr. Steffes is originally from St. Cloud, Minnesota and loves living in San Diego.
Dr. Steffes previously worked as a veterinary technician at the Pet Hospital of Peñasquitos and as a diver at Sea World. Dr. Steffes personal interests include keeping and breeding many reptiles for the last fifteen years; he currently owns a dog, a cat. While in veterinary school, Dr. Steffes spent a month doing an externship with Dr. Douglas Mader at Marathon Animal Hospital in Key West, FL, where he worked with Green Iguanas and Green Sea Turtles. Dr. Steffes has an outgoing friendly personality, is an exceptional veterinarian and has great client communication skills. Dr. Steffes is a member of the American Animal Hospital Association, American Veterinary Medical Association, San Diego County Veterinary Medical Association and the Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians.
